Ramblings, etc. offers observations, from time to time, about people, places and
things I experienced through the years riding motorbikes. Since I’m officially off
the road and relaxing during these warm winter months here in Florida, I
manage to keep busy, eating, napping, visiting new and old friends and when
the mood strikes, sitting at my small dining table pounding out the odd story or
two (I know, one does not pound on a laptop, but it does bring to mind the
universal thought of the lonely, reclusive writer sweating over an ancient Royal
or Underwood typewriter, smoke curling from an overloaded ashtray and
crumpled paper filling the trash can and spilling onto the floor.) Oh, pleeease!
I’ll include a few short fiction pieces centered on the excitement of two and
three wheel motorcycles adventures as well as several profiles of people I’ve
known.
The included profiles were written for Cycle magazine (no longer published)
some time ago. When I worked for The Record in Hackensack I sold a number of
free lance stories and photos to the magazine. It was a good rag helmed by the
likes of Gordon Jennings, John Covington, Cook Neilson and Jess Thomas. It’s
interesting the memories that pop-up from time to time. I remember picking up
Jess Thomas at his home for a photo shoot and being offered a cup of his wife’s
great coffee. I remember she’d pour the water directly on the grounds, letting it
drip through. For what ever reason, I was never able to duplicate the taste of
that wonderful coffee. All these memories and more came back when I logged
onto the Internet and found a guy selling back issues of bike magazines,
including several Cycle issues, with my stories. Like so much stuff in our lives
these episodes were forgotten. What pleasure to bring them back into the
sunlight.

In the mid-sixties I began a two year project building a tubular frame for my little
S90 Honda. The bike was built with a pressed steel frame and in one of my less
sane moments decided to remove all the pieces, take measurements and
fashion a space frame. Oh my, I didn’t realize what I’d gotten my self into. The
tank and fenders were reworked by my friend Mad Tiny and added to the looks
of what turned out to be a wonderful, quick little machine. At some point I’ll tell
the story. In the mean time if you go to my photo page you’ll see a photo of the
bike without its fairing.

I’ve tried my hand at fiction through the years, and found it difficult, hard, easy,
impossible, frustrating and of course satisfying, but it does have its own set of
rules that can be inflexible while at the same time offering enormous latitude.
What you’ll find is a pot pourri of how the art and passion of riding has impacted
my life. Hmmm, does that make me a Roads Scholar?? Hope you enjoy Cool
Days, Hot Nights and Everlasting Summer.
